As previously mentioned, I follow a significant amount of animal rescue pages and sometime ago I came across a heartbreaking story. Unfortunately, my ADHD brain can't seem to recall which platform and who's account I found this information on. (I just left Laika's name in my google search a few months back). Whoever you are, thank you for raising awareness and sharing this poor girls journey.
Laika's story is so beyond heartbreaking.
On November 3rd 1957, Laika was one of the many stray dogs that were rounded up from the streets of Moscow. Laika was chosen for the soviet space program because there was a general theory that stray animals were more stronger and capable of surviving rough conditions. Upon examination in a lab, she displayed a calm demeanour which the space programme deemed "ideal". She was chosen specifically because she was a stray. To be blunt, she was considered useless and expendable. The programme were well aware that the space mission was a huge risk. They were aware that the mission would subject Laika to cold, hunger and harsh conditions yet they took her anyway. Laika died within hours of this space mission mainly due to the fact that the capsule she was placed in had overheated that caused her to panic and suffer from extreme stress.
Can anyone truly imagine how terrified this poor soul was! If I've learned anything from Mona, it's that strays need more affection, they need to know that love exists. Laika went from one nightmare to another.
To my horror, I have found that despite how advance our technology has become, animals are still used in space research.
I need help to make this matter, I need help with the battle to abolish animal exploitation.
